Timian er en varme- og lyselskende plante. Den trives best i kalkholdig, næringsrik og godt drenert jord, og tåler dårlig områder med stående vann.
- Thyme is a heat- and light-loving plant. It thrives best in calcareous, fertile, and well-draining soil, and tolerates waterlogged areas poorly.

Vekstskifte: Kan stå på samme sted i 4–6 år, og bør derfor plasseres utenfor vanlig vekstskifte.
- Crop Rotation: It can remain in the same place for 4–6 years, and should therefore be placed outside the main crop rotation.
Gode forkulturer er radkulturer og belgvekster.
- Good preceding crops are row crops and legumes.
Formering: Skjer oftest fra frø; småplanter kan plantes ut fra slutten av mai med ca. 50×25 cm radavstand.
- Propagation: Mostly done from seed; small plants can be planted out from the end of May with approx. 50×25 cm row spacing.
Stell: Mekanisk luking eller forutgående herbicidbehandling.
- Care: Primarily mechanical weed control or prior herbicide treatment.
Næringstilførsel: Organisk eller balansert gjødsling før planting anbefales.
- Nutrient Supply: Organic or balanced fertilisation is recommended before planting.
Innhøsting: Første året én gang, deretter to ganger årlig. Klipp under full blomstring i solskinnsvær, når innholdet av eterisk olje er høyest. For dyp eller sen klipping øker risikoen for frostskader.
- Harvesting: Once in the first year, then twice annually. Cut during full flowering in sunny weather, when the essential oil content is highest. Cutting too deeply or too late increases the risk of frost damage.
